Debaters in the top four of Queensland competition

Massive congratulations to our Year 9 debating team, Amelia Strazdins, Jazmine Barrett, Brooklyn Self, Ema Machan and Gabriella (Gabby) Brown and their coach Ms Leishman for their ongoing success in the Queensland Debating Union competition. Having now reached the semi-finals, they are well and truly flying the flag for our school and also for state schools as they remain the only public school in the Year 9 competition.

To get to this point, the girls have won four rounds of competition against both other public and private schools. They then entered the finals phase of the competition, the biggest in the south east corner of the state. During the finals, they have knocked out Mansfield State High School, Brisbane State High School and St Patricks College to reach the semi-finals. Topics they have debated include being the affirmative to “That we should ban gossip magazines and celebrity news outlets” and “That we should ban private ownership of cars and force everyone to use public transport or taxi services”.

The girls will be in action again for their semi-final clash. They know they are the negative in a short preparation topic (unknown until a short time before they commence the debate) and their opponents are Somerville House. We wish the girls the best of luck and one thing is for sure. Regardless of the outcome on Friday evening, the entire Bribie Island SHS community is immensely proud of their achievement.
